Turns out it’s not just animals and nuts that can be milked. Cucumbers are included, too, and by doing so it makes the green vegetable taste less bitter.
The kitchen hack is currently going viral on TikTok after a woman who goes by @BasicallyPerkfect shared the hack on the video-sharing platform. It has since been viewed more than one million times.
According to the woman from New Orleans, Louisiana, she learned the trick from her sister-in-law.
“I was like: ‘Excuse me?’” she said. “I know most little tricks and I had never heard of that.”
“I don’t know if you’ve ever had a cucumber that’s a little bit bitter, like it just doesn’t taste fresh. That’s because you have to milk your cucumbers.”

In the video, she explains that to milk a cucumber, you have to cut the end off before rubbing it against the cut part of the vegetable in circular motions.
“Then you start rubbing it together in circular motions,” she explained, rubbing the chopped piece against the end of the rest of the cucumber.
A white, milky substance resembling cottage cheese starts to build up, to which she said, “You can already see that white stuff coming out.”
According to LifeHacker, the compound cucurbitacin is responsible for the bitter taste, which usually lies at the ends or close to the skin. Removing the skin can eliminate the bitterness, but you’ll also be removing most of the veggie’s nutrients. So, to extract it without peeling, simply rubbing the chopped piece against the end until the foam stops coming out will do the trick.
And that’s what milking a cucumber involves!
