The hot chocolate is a nostalgic winter drink for most of us, but it can err on the side of a dessert rather than a beverage, chock (pardon the pun) full of sugar. But this healthier, vegan update is dairy-free, low in fat and has zero refined sugar, with mood-boosting maca powder, a root vegetable native to Peru which may improve your overall wellbeing, and a hint of cinnamon.
The beauty is that because you’re putting it together yourself instead of your barista, you can completely customise the flavour profile. Want it richer and more akin to dark chocolate? Use more cacao powder. Need it a touch sweeter? Just add more honey or maple syrup.

In any case, we’ll be curling up with this one for many weekends to come.
- 1 cup Califia Farms Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk
- 2 tablespoons cacao powder
- 1 teaspoon maca powder
- 1-2 teaspoons maple syrup or honey
- Generous dash of cinnamon
- Pinch of sea salt
Stovetop: Whisk everything together in a saucepan over a low heat until heated through.
Microwave: Place everything together in your travel mug/thermos and shake to combine (keep the lid on and take it to the office with you). When you’re ready to serve, shake again, transfer to a mug and heat for 45-60 seconds in the microwave.
