6 things you didn’t know you can cook in an airfryer

We speak to the experts about how to get the most out of your airfryer.

With people spending more time at home, there has been a dramatic increase in popularity of air fryers, since this time last year.

They are a healthier frying option, with up to 80% less fat than a conventional deep fryer, but your food retains that delightful and satisfying crunch, so you don’t have to feel guilty anymore.

Who doesn’t love the idea of guilt free fried goods.

Air fryers cook with hot air; the food requires no more than a gentle spray, to a couple of teaspoons of oil to allow for even, crispy and fast results.

New technology in air fryers has also meant that they can not only be used for frying, but they also have programs for roasting, grilling, baking and reheating, so they are literally like small ovens that sit on a benchtop.

What you can cook in an airfryer is endless and it’s worth experimenting. We’ve all seen the pasta chips go viral on TikTok – but some other great ideas include banana fritters, cakes, cannoli, steaks cooked in just minutes and not to mention my favourite doughnuts. Imagine all the taste of fluffy light doughnuts, but with no greasy oil!

Air fried crispy chicken

It’s so easy to crumb chicken by simply using an egg wash and popping it in the airfryer basket to cook. It’s fast, moist and so delicious.

Top tip: you can also do this with wings for a delicious starter.

Sausage rolls

Whether it’s your own favourite recipe or frozen store bought, the air fryer needs no preheating – these are quick and easy in the air fryer and cook or heat up in minutes!

Fish and chips

Similarly to the way you crumb chicken, you can easily crumb fish to get a crispy edge and it’s a great way to feel like you’re having a battered fish without the extra fat.

The best part about making chips in the airfryer is that they’re so quick to make! Forget par-boiling and hours on the oven, often you can have homemade chips ready within 30 mins.

Potato bake

As mentioned, airfryers are kind of like mini ovens. All you need is an oven-safe dish that fits in your airfryer and you can make your potatoes au gratin easily (with a lovely crispy top).

Toasted sandwiches

That’s right – you can make your grilled cheese in the airfryer. You could try basting the outsides of the sandwich in butter or mayo to make it extra crispy, if you like. Simply baste, pop your cheese in the middle and airfry – remembering to flip so it cooks on both sides.

Vegetable and fruit chips

Potato, zucchini, apple and banana chips – the opportunities are endless! It’s so easy to chop, season and fry.
