Keeping healthy snacks on standby as you work from home is the best way to keep on top of your health goals. Here, fitness expert Sam Wood shares his favourite.
When you’re working from home, it’s easy to go crazy on the snacks since you have free access to an open kitchen and pantry.
But did you know snacking can add an extra 500 calories to your daily intake without you even realising? And that’s the minimum number.
So, to help you stay on track with your diet goals, here are Sam Wood’s top 7 favourite WFH snacks he can’t live without – and yes, chocolate does make the list.

1. Veggie sticks and hummus
Super easy, super healthy and a great way to up your veggie intake. Slice up some carrot, celery, cucumber and capsicum and serve with some hummus for an easy afternoon sack.

2. Tuna on rice cakes
When I’m after something a little more savoury or I’ve just finished a workout I’m a big fan of tuna on rice cakes. Tomato & Basil tuna is my favourite, but I mix up my flavours to keep things interesting.
Tuna is such a great source of protein and rice cakes a great lower carb alternative to toast when you don’t want your snack to be too calorie dense.
3. Handful of almonds
Not the most exciting snack but one that packs a punch. Almonds are full of good fats and Vitamin E. Just make sure you stick to a small handful as they’re nutrient dense.
4. Apple Nachos
This is my new favourite dessert (that I may or may not eat at any time of day)
- 1 red apple
- 1 tbs peanut butter (Mayvers dark roasted is perfect for this)
- 2 tsp desiccated coconut
- 20g 85 per cent dark chocolate (grated)
1. Slice apple into thin nacho wedges.
2. Drizzle peanut butter over the apple nachos.
3. Grate chocolate.
4. Sprinkle coconut and chocolate over apples.
5. Boiled eggs
I know these aren’t the most exciting snack but they’re such an easy one, a great source of protein and fuss-free.
6. Chocolate bullets
Not healthy, but once the packet is open, I’m in trouble. And it’s ok to treat yourself every now and then.
7. Choc protein balls
Whipping up a batch of protein balls on the weekend ensures I have a healthy snack on hand throughout the week. Snez and I are huge chocoholics so when Shahna (the head nutritionist at 28), created a chocolate protein ball recipe, we were in heaven.
Here’s the recipe:
- 1 cup sunflower seed kernels
- 1 cup shredded coconut
- 1/2 cup almond butter
- 1/4 cup cacao powder
- 1/4 cup vanilla protein powder (optional)
- 3 tablespoons coconut oil (melted)
- 1/2 tablespoon cinnamon (ground)
1. Add all ingredients to the food processor and mix until well combined.
2. Scooping out a tablespoon at a time, form small balls by rolling the mixture in your hands.
3. Store in the fridge in an airtight container.
